Mill Chase Academy & Leisure Centre, Bordon

Hampshire County Council

About this project

R Collard Ltd were delighted to have successfully completed the £1.2m demolition works contract at the former Mill Chase Academy and Leisure centre in Bordon.

The site contained 15 different structures and the form of construction varied from a traditional brick build to steel or reinforced concrete frame with the onsite sports hall and leisure centre being portal framed with composite panels housing a gym and swimming pool. The project scope required all buildings to be demolished including removal of the 3g multi use sports (MUGA) pitch that was to the rear of the site.

One of the main constraints of the project was the coordination required in maintaining service to the leisure centre throughout the first phase of works as it was a contractual requirement to remain open due to an outstanding lease agreement. While the leisure remained open the surrounding buildings of the site required to have all asbestos removed, soft stripped and demolished to slab level only in preparation for the handover of the leisure centre. The second phase relying on the decant of the leisure and utility disconnections being delivered quickly which enabled us to complete demolition and removal of all substructures.

The challenges
  • To produce a first-class service for a valued client and to complete the project on time and to budget.
  • To safely demolish over 13,000m2 of structures while working in a public area with minimal disturbance the local residents, leisure centre users or the environment.
  • Working around live services including onsite substation and gas meter housings to be retained until decant of leisure centre.
  • Working in and around a live community while allowing public access through the site as part of a sequential traffic management and logistic strategy.
  • Working around a live UKPN HV substation and Gas mains running through the site during demolition.
  • Sustainable remove the 173 tonne 3g MUGA sports pitch
  • 550Lm of tree protection to be installed in line with arboriculturalist report.
Structural demolition

Utilising competent in-house CCDO trained staff we were able to coordinate the asbestos removal and soft strip with the demolition in a sequence that accelerated the programme. All structures were safely demolished in line with BS 6187: 2011 with the use of specialist demolition plant and hydraulic attachments which aided in the reduction of noise, dust and vibration.

Asbestos removal

Notifiable and non-notifiable asbestos was located through the buildings. This included gaskets, soffits, AIB, Asbestos cement.  All asbestos removal was carried out by a licenced contractor in accordance with CAR 2012 and the Hazardous waste regulations. All wastes consignment notes were issues to the client.
