The existing Vitrum building had a gross floor space of 44,000sqft over three storeys, with the plant located on the roof. The scope of the project was to demolish the Vitrum building in preparation for the new state of the art office and lab Research and Development building.

The works comprised of the soft strip and demolition of the existing building. The demolition was required to make way for a new multi-storey science research facility. For this demolition project, Collards formed the role of the primary contractor for the duration of the programme. The demolition of the building included the grubbing up and removal of the existing foundations as well as the demolition of the reinforced concrete frame superstructure. Collards also removed and capped off the gas supply and the data /communications from the building.

This phase included the demolition of a number of two and three storey structures, including associated foundations. The structures were heavily contaminated with asbestos-containing material, which were removed under licenced conditions by our in-house asbestos removal business Amiante STR.
