Following the Spring 2024 Budget, the Government announced the cost of landfill tax is to rise by £22.45 from 1st April 2025. This rise in the Standard Rate marks a significant jump in landfill tax compared to previous years, with the Government explaining this uplift is necessary “to better reflect actual RPI and ensure the tax continues to incentivise investment in more sustainable waste management infrastructure”.
Subsequently, we expect prices to rise across all waste stream disposal as the industry and recycling markets react to absorb this change and incorporate the heightened taxation, energy and labour costs.
Landfill tax increase:
| Material sent to landfill | From 1 April 2024 | From 1 April 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | England and Northern Ireland | England and Northern Ireland |
| Standard rate (per tonne) | £103.70 | £126.15 |
| Lower rate (per tonne) | £3.30 | £4.05 |
Inevitably this will have a knock-on effect within the industry, therefore we are encouraging businesses to act now by becoming more aligned with the principles of the Waste Hierarchy – which gives priority to waste prevention, re-use, recycling and recovery.
As a responsible waste management business, Collard Environmental limits waste sent to landfill, with high percentages of our waste being recycled or utilised in Energy from Waste processes. Recycling plays a crucial role by diverting waste away from landfill through processing materials into useful resources. By having the correct recycling containers and waste management processes in place, you can divert waste from landfill, support a Circular Economy, and benefit from considerable financial savings.
