Grading & Excavation

Grading & Excavation

Grading is the leveling of a given area in preparation for pouring foundations of homes or businesses.  Grading is not a DIY project that you can simply undertake by yourself and professional services are paramount for ensuring that a site is fully prepared for development and construction.  Grading can only commence on site once the site has been cleared of all obstructions.  Grading in civil engineering and landscape architectural construction is the work of ensuring a level base, or one with a specified slope, for a construction work such as a foundation, the base course for a road or a railway, or landscape and garden improvements, or surface drainage.  For more information about our grading or excavation services, please get in touch with our team at R Collard today by calling us on 01252 844688.

What is grading?

There are several different purposes to grading but the main one is to enable construction on lands where it’s currently uneven.  Our grading contractors operate a piece of heavy construction equipment - called a grader - which is used to smooth and flatten a surface for road or building foundations.  Professional contractors will also have the expertise to determine what angle your slope will need to be when leveling so water will run away from the buildings you are constructing.

What is excavation?

Bulk excavations are regularly used in the construction of major infrastructure projects such as roads and railways to best prepare the ground for the construction of large buildings including office blocks, hospitals and housing developments.  Our experienced team, at R Collard’s, have the experience and equipment to undertake a variety of bulk excavations to ensure the ground is at the right level for building work to proceed.  Experienced engineers calculate the exact volumes of earth which will be needed to complete the project, using the latest specialist software.

What are they used for?

Grading and excavating are predominantly used for preparing and levelling land at construction sites before development work begins.  However, the processes of grading and excavation are far from one-dimensional and can be used for a variety of other purposes too which include;-

  • Site clearing.
  • Ditches.
  • Basement excavation.
  • Foundation excavation.
  • Erosion control.
  • Dirt and rock excavation.
  • Driveway installation.
  • Road installation.

What determines the price of having an area graded or excavated?
The price of a project for grading or excavation can depend on a number of factors including the size of the property or site, the density of the land and the quality of the soil.  We will offer a site survey before we quote on a price so that we can ensure the best possible price.  Other factors to consider when pricing up a grading or excavation projects also include the existing site properties fill, and any existing rocks or trees on the property.
