Hart Leisure Centre, Fleet

This £183k contract consisted of the complete demolition of the newly replaced Hart Leisure Centre in Fleet.

The building consisted of approximately 5,500sqm of mixed build construction. Generally constructed of large steel truss portal frame with a recently refurbished metal cladding façade. The building comprised of sections constructed at different time periods with older sections of the building adapted to accommodate the new.

The site shared the site with a secondary school and we ensured regular communication with the school at all times. We also sequenced the demolition to ensure the boundary walls near the school were last to be demolished to maintain an additional physical barrier between the school and the demolition site to reduce possible nuisances such as noise and dust. Our works coincided with student critical exams. In order to reduce disruption, we had regular meeting with the school during our works. As a mitigation strategy we coordinated our demolition with the schools’ exams and avoided noisy works during the students’ exams periods.

We were required to protect and maintain a HV substation which was supplying adjacent school.  We protected the substation with fencing and timber boarding. A section around the substation was left to remain until last. The known route of the HV cables were highlighted, demarcated onsite and briefings provided to operatives. There were no cable strikes or loss of service as a result of our careful on site management.

Asbestos was found within the building that was not highlighted on the original survey. Collard were quick to have the sample analysed and advised the client. In order to avoid delays we re-sequenced our works in order to minimise the delay to the works.

Works included the removal of pool foundations where the extent of foundations were not known and live services utilities were present. Careful excavation and investigation work with experienced operators and supervision ensured the works were carried out without disruption to services or the adjacent school.

Project Successes
  • We successfully completed the project to time and to budget
  • The project was completed with zero accidents
  • We sustainability recycled 99.9% of the waste onsite
  • We had no accidents or near misses relating to the school including maintaining all utilities and services throughout the project.
