Glaxo Smith Klein HQ, Greenford

One of our biggest and most complicated demolition projects.  Despite the complexities, this £5m project was delivered on time, on budget, and resulted in us winning ‘Demolition Contractor of the Year’ at the British Demolition Awards.

This canal side location included a Grade II listed building, asbestos containing materials, operational businesses close by, and an unexploded Second World War bomb.

The project involved the demolition of several buildings on the headquarters site. The largest of the buildings was four storeys above ground and contained a two-storey reinforced concrete basement, nine metres below ground.

Temporary works – in the form of steel sheet piling – were provided to support a 300mm diameter gas main that ran the full length of the building.

As part of our zero waste to landfill commitment, we used the nearby canal to transport waste from site to our award-winning recycling plant, minimising vehicle movements.

During this project, we recycled around 50,000 cubic metres of concrete, 8,000 tonnes of scrap metal, and 1000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste – by river barge – which reduced vehicle movements from site by approx. 200.
